Persons served by Enable may be matched with a volunteer if they request a “friendly visitor” or “friendly assistant.” Each year, Enable has over 380 persons involved in volunteer work with our agency. These volunteers generally contribute over 3,100 hours of service doing various tasks. Some of them are involved as friendly visitors which means that they commit to going to the home of a person served by Enable and take time to get to know the person and befriend them. Some volunteers may help with tasks such as organizing mail or transporting the consumer. Other volunteers help as part of a group that has committed to helping maintain a group home (doing painting or yard work) or that wants to be involved in a specific event or project with consumers (such as holding a barbeque at a group home or helping Day Program participants with a project.) Enable staff work with both the consumers and the volunteers to ensure the right fit is made for working together.
