Accessibility Services: Home Modifications

Home modifications and adaptive equipment increase the personal independence and safety for individuals with disabilities living in their own homes. Typical modifications to houses and apartments include wheelchair ramps to and from outside doors, widening doorways, grab bars near beds and in bathrooms, railings, adapted showers, stairglides and lifts. Equipment may include wheelchairs, walkers, lifts and communication devices.

Enable receives funding for these projects from multiple sources such as the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD), the United Way of Greater Mercer County, Mercer County and the City of Trenton, or through donations. Enable works with applicants to determine what is needed and the cost, obtains contractors to do the renovation, and oversees the project to its completion. Enable staff order needed equipment.

There are no age limitations or type of disability qualifications in general; however, each unique source of funding has its own requirements. For example, DDD dollars can only be used for persons who are referred by DDD; City of Trenton funds are only for persons living in Trenton.
