Vision Statement

Our vision is to enable individuals with disabilities to live full and independent lives within the community.

Mission Statement

Enable, Inc. is an agency devoted to supporting individuals with disabilities to live full and independent lives. Enable promotes individual choice that reflects what is meaningful to each person served and his or her family. It provides services, supports, programs, and living arrangements that facilitate full inclusion into community life. These include group homes, in-home services, and services that provide relief for caregivers.

Values

Enable affirms these values

1We support each person’s dignity and individuality. We respond to individual needs and preferences with support. To the extent possible, we will individualize our services and work to accommodate the feelings and special service needs of persons served and their families. We believe in customer service.
2We believe building relationships that lead to acceptance and respect are the foundation of how we work with one another at Enable. Staff persons believe that being positive, respectful, caring, patient, and trustworthy is the way to interact with each person we serve. We believe this is also important in how we and those we serve relate to other family members, community members, and other staff.
3We focus on the capabilities of individuals with disabilities. These capabilities can be interests, preferences, attributes or gifts that create opportunities for participation in community life. Everyone has something to give!
4We respect and maintain the confidentiality of all those we serve to the extent possible.
5No matter what the size of our agency, we will offer services with “a small agency feel.” We will attempt to know those we serve by name and give them personalized attention.
6Enable believes each staff person is important to providing quality service.
7Family members of the persons we serve are encouraged to remain actively involved with their loved ones as appropriate.
8Enable commits to striving for good health and fitness for all we serve. We will do our best to provide special activities or connect those we serve with activities that suit their needs.
History

Enable began as an affiliate of United Cerebral Palsy of New Jersey in 1989. In order to serve individuals who had disabilities other than cerebral palsy, and to expand into a greater geographic area, the agency become an independent, non-profit agency in 1994 with the new name of Enable. Enable then began to develop programs for persons and their families with cognitive and/or physical disabilities. Enable has grown through the years and now offers a variety of community based programs that promote inclusion, independence, safety and an improved quality of life for individuals with disabilities in our communities.

Service Area

Enable provides services in the State of New Jersey. We primarily serve the central New Jersey area which includes the counties of Mercer, Monmouth, Middlesex, Somerset and Hunterdon. Our administrative headquarters are in Mercer County. (See Contact Us for email, address, and directions.)

Who We Assist

Enable assists persons who have permanent or chronic disabilities. The disability may be physical or cognitive and it causes difficulties with communication, self-care, mobility or the ability to live independently.

There are no age restrictions for services. We support individuals of all ages. However, some services have restrictions because of the type of funding received to support the service. Since we receive funds from the New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD), some services are limited to persons eligible for DDD services. For DDD, the physical or mental impairment must be apparent before age 22 and be lifelong. This includes conditions such as mental retardation, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, spina bifida, autism and other neurological impairments.

Special funding through the United Way of Greater Mercer County particularly allows Enable to assist persons who are elderly and those whose disability may be the result of an injury or of a medical condition such as multiple sclerosis, stroke or other debilitating illness.

Enable does not provider service to persons whose primary disability is mental illness or substance abuse

Funding

Enable’s primary source of funds are through the NJ Department of Human Services, Division of Developmental Disabilities. We also receive grants and awards from organizations and foundations, conduct fund raising on a regular basis, and we accept independent fees for services.
